PORT TOWNSEND — City Council candidate Patsy Caldwell will face incumbent Michelle Sandoval for Position No. 1 in the November general election.
Caldwell, a legal assistant and paralegal with the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, squeaked by Mary McQuillen with only six votes for second place in the primary race.
A required ballot recount, triggered by a less than a 0.17 percent difference between Caldwell and McQuillen, repeated the initial results.
Caldwell received 951 votes or 26.65 percent. McQuillen, a homemaker and consultant to Native American tribes, logged 945 votes, or 26.48 percent.
Sandoval’s front-running status was never in doubt from election night tallying on — she collected 1,649 votes, or 46.2 percent.
McQuillen said she will urge her supporters to vote for Caldwell.
In addition to the seat held by Sandoval, a real estate owner-broker, two other City Council seats will be contested in the all-mail general election, for which ballots will be distributed Oct. 19.
Incumbent Kees Kolff is being challenged by Mark Welch, while the position being vacated by Councilwoman Frieda Fenn is being contested by Scott Walker and Sydney Lipton.
