PORT TOWNSEND — School Board members tonight are scheduled to discuss a hiring committee’s recommendation for a new football coach to replace Dan Fountain, who has coached the Port Townsend High School varsity since 2000.
The board meets at 6:30 p.m. in the Lincoln Building Board Room, 450 Fir St.
Made up of six high school staff members and one student athlete, the hiring committee earlier this month recommended Tom Sly, a football coach from Gig Harbor, for next year’s head coaching position.
Although a decision on replacing Fountain was expected from the board last week, members unanimously voted to postpone approval of the committee’s recommendation.
The board’s motion was followed by an emotional appeal from Port Townsend football players to keep Fountain, who led them to a 9-2 season last year.
The board tonight is expected to make a final decision on who will coach the Redskins next year.
“It’s back on the agenda for the board to vote on,” said Port Townsend School District Superintendent Carol Andreasen.
“We have to vote on this.”
