Bail set for driver in Port Angeles wreck on U.S. 101

PORT ANGELES — Bail has been set at $75,000 for a Port Angeles man alleged to have been driving drunk and causing a three-vehicle wreck on U.S. Highway 101 on Saturday night.

Raymond U. Arndt remained in Clallam County jail Tuesday afternoon after his first court appearance Monday.

He is being held for investigation of vehicular assault.

Charges are expected to be filed Thursday in Clallam County Superior Court.

The State Patrol said Arndt, 34, of Port Angeles was heading eastbound when he crossed the centerline near Sequim at about 7:40 p.m. and swiped a vehicle before crashing into a second car head-on.

The driver of that car, Christopher S. Sherwood, 40, of Victoria, was transferred from Olympic Medical Center to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with extensive leg injuries.

He was listed in satisfactory condition at the hospital Monday. Hospital personnel did not immediately return a call requesting his condition Tuesday.

Six others in the wreck were treated for minor injuries at OMC and released, the State Patrol said.

That includes Arndt, who was booked into jail after being treated at OMC.

The State Patrol said Arndt admitted to drinking beer.

The agency said he had impaired speech; bloodshot, watery eyes; and a flushed complexion. A trooper also said he detected the smell of intoxicants coming from the vehicle.
