Alzheimer’s walk slated for Sunday in Port Angeles

Editor’s note: The day of the walk has been changed to reflect a correction — Saturday, not Sunday.

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles edition of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is planned on City Pier on Saturday.

Registration for the walk will begin at 10 a.m. followed by an opening ceremony at 11 a.m. and the 2-mile walk at 11:30 a.m.

This is a family- and pet-friendly event and the walk route is fully accessible.

It is free to attend; however, participants who donate or raise $100 or more will receive a Walk to End Alzheimer’s T-shirt.

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s disease.

Last year, 141 people participated in the Port Angeles Walk, raising $23,161.

Funds raised for the event are used for Alzheimer’s research and to provide care and support services for local families impacted by the the disease.

“The Walk to End Alzheimer’s brings the community together to honor and celebrate those we’ve known, loved and lost to the disease, as well their devoted and compassionate caregivers,” said Bob Le Roy, executive director of the Alzheimer’s Association Washington State Chapter.

“When we walk together, each step brings us closer to our vision of a world without Alzheimer’s disease.”

In Washington, more than 110,000 people are living with Alzheimer’s and another 340,000 unpaid caregivers provide support. It is the sixth leading cause of death nationally, and the third leading cause of death in the state.
