11-hour standoff ends peacefully

PORT ANGELES — A man whose family reported him suicidal early Thursday morning was found unconscious by a SWAT team later that afternoon after an 11-hour standoff at his west Port Angeles home.

The 43-year-old man, identified by a neighbor as Todd J. McGarvie, allegedly told his ex-wife that he was going to take 100 methadone tablets and kill himself and anyone who attempted to stop him, said Sgt. Ed Schilke, a spokesman for the Port Angeles Police Department.

McGarvie was reportedly despondent about his recent divorce, police said.

After a SWAT team entered the home and found McGarvie, he was transported to Olympic Medical Center and then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle were he was listed in serious condition.

The area around West Sixth and F streets was cordoned off at 2:30 a.m., with neighbors evacuated and Port Angeles Police officers and Clallam County Sheriff’s deputies standing guard for the duration.

Port Angeles Police Chief Tom Riepe said McGarvie would not be immediately arrested.

Members of the Washington State Patrol SWAT team that entered the house and found McGarvie unconscious on the floor said there were no weapons visible.

McGarvie’s family members said they had noticed a change in his behavior and removed rifles from the house, but there was a pistol that was not accounted for, Schilke said.

Officers shut off the streets running by the corner house directly across the street from Shane Park and repeatedly attempted to contact McGarvie during the standoff.
