Avoid messy shadow smears by priming your lids before applying colour. An   eyelid primer not only neutralises your lid tone, it provides a smooth base that helps hold eyeshadow in place. Proof Cosmetics Shadow Magnet ($25) is a good one, but a light sweep of face powder can also do the trick. A light touch with blotting paper can also help mop up excess oilwithout moving your make-up.
