There’s a lot to be said about the longevity of a cream eyeshadow. Whether it’s a highly pigmented metallic or a subtle wash of colour, a good cream eyeshadow will carry you through an entire night out.
Better yet, use one as a grabby base for the powder shadows in your favourite eyeshadow palette. The final result will be almost impossible to remove without the assistance of a cotton pad saturated in micellar water.
However, the same kudos can’t be given for their lifespan when sitting in a pot.
Depending on the formulation, the way they’ve been stored, or whether they’re a few years old, cream eyeshadows can dry down, fade in colour and crack. A far cry from the butter-soft consistency they once were.
But, there’s still hope. We promise!

How to save your cream eyeshadow after it’s dried out
Whether you’ve accidentally left the lid off your eyeshadow overnight (not again!) or the pot is nearing its use-by date, you don’t have to say your farewells just yet.
No? No! With techniques like applying heat or mixing a liquid through, even the driest cream eyeshadows can be revived.
1/ Try a little heat
Sometimes all your cream eyeshadow needs is a little defrosting. Try warming up the product with heat from your hair dryer.
What to do: Point your hair dryer at the cream shadow for 30 seconds to a minute, then give the product a stir with a cotton bud.
2/ Add some witch hazel
The addition of witch hazel ($10 from Woolworths) will restore moisture into a dried out eyeshadow, plus work to soothe the appearance of puffy eyes all at the same time.
Using a clean cotton bud, mix the witch hazel into your eyeshadow pot and stir until combined. Add more as required.
3/ Mix in a facial spray or essence
In the same way a thirsty complexion drinks up a facial mist or essence, a dried out cream shadow will benefit greatly from the hit of moisture.
Dispense the facial mist ($9.99 from Chemist Warehouse) into the pot, loosen up the eyeshadow and mix.
4/ Give it a (super quick) microwave hit
The same way our lipstick will go soft when we’ve left it in the sun a little too long, giving your dry shadow a hit in the microwave will soften its consistency.
Pop your eyeshadow (with the lid off) into the microwave for no more than 10 seconds at a time or until the formula is soft. Next, mix with a cotton bud, making sure to get rid of any air bubbles. Allow the pot to completely cool down before use.

Have any of your cream products dried out? Do you have any tips on how to bring them back to life?
I owuld get a make up artist to help me with this one.
The microwave tip is a surprising one!
Sure is, but a good one.
I just trashed mine a couple of days ago. Should have known better.
Oh no, what a pity
Good to know.
oh wow I used to just use a tiny drop of facial oil
I just tried this and WOW!!
I discard cream eyeshadows due to their short expiry date for hygiene reasons, so they never have a chance of drying out.
I would of thought that the hair dryer would of made it worse.
I use powder eyeshadows bur thanks for the tips for those who use cream eyeshadow
If a cream eyeshadow is so badly dried out that I can’t use it, I honestly consider whether perhaps it should be binned……..
Yeah, how hygienic would it be if it has been sitting around for ages. I guess this is why I don’t use cream eye shadow
It worked for me.
I reckon my friend has a little bottle of drops from MAC that does this.
Thanks for the Great Tips on keeping Cream Eyeshadows from drying out.
Great tips that help us be more sustainable with our make up choices
My draw is full of them.
I used to use CE and didn’t like it. When my PES dries out I think it’s time to toss it. I like to make sustainability gains in other ways.
yay comment moderation!
Great tips as I’ve got a few of these that need reviving
I mainly buy powder eye shadows.
Yes heating things is good, like with nail polishes
Good to know.
I would normally just chuck it out if it dries up. I’ll have to give this a go next time it happens.
that is what I do too
I’ve heard of the microwave tip but haven’t tried it myself. I’ll have to remember to try witch hazel.
witch hazel is a good toner as well so won’t be wasted
Yes, I often buy it.
Thanks for the tips. This really helps.
I usually throw out if they get to this stage
Good tips!
I haven’t used cream eyeshadow for many years
I’ve never used a cream eyeshadow, only powder.
I will probably need to do this.
Very helpful tips.
Some handy ideas there – thank you.
some nifty tricks to kick it back into gear! I wish I had never chucked out my dried out estee lauder one now – this may have worked well for it
Thanks for these great tips, will come in very handy.
Do not have any. Cream goods are not for me.
Haven’t tried a cream eyeshadow before. Didn’t realise they dried out
Handy tips.
Some good tips here.
I prefer the powder eye shadow.
So do I but sometimes one is given a cream eye shadow to use.
Such good suggestions.
I just throw them out
good reason to go and buy more
These are really handy tips – the kind I really appreciate. Thanks.
I like the quick and easy microwave hit.
I have a few that these revamp suggestions would help.
Good ways to make products last longer
Good to know!
This is a timely bump. I’ve got witch hazel but I don’t think a cotton bud would work, so I’ll use a tail comb to mix.
I might need these tips!
I saw a reel on FB this week where you add eyeshadow primer to turn your powdered eyeshadow into a cream eyeshadow.
I tried it with serum and it worked. The advantage of using a eye primer is that it last longer on your face but I didn’t have any in stock 🙁
Some good tips here. I like a cream eyeshadow
I have never tried cream eye shadow.
How cool! Thanks for the tips.
