We Found A $14 Dupe For Michelle Yeoh’s Oscars Eyeshadow

Michelle Yeoh has become one of our favourite celebrities to spot on the red carpet during awards season. Why? Well, besides her clear flair for fashion, she also always rocks impeccable beauty looks.

Naturally, we were anticipating something fabulous for The 97th Academy Awards, after the 2023 Best Actress Oscar winner delivered several wig moments in the lead up to the A-list event. And we think we can all agree that Michelle took our collective breath away when she graced the red carpet yesterday, opting for a refined and elegant aesthetic befitting of the biggest night in Hollywood.

The actress wore a jewel-toned blue Balenciaga gown and delicate diamond jewellery from Boucheron, which clearly influenced her makeup artist Sabrina Bedrani.

Michelle wore a full face of luxury makeup

Michelle and Sabrina created a quietly luxurious face of makeup that gave the 62 year old an unmistakeably youthful glow. But it was Sabrina’s careful attention to detail around Michelle’s eyes that really drew our attention — the makeup artist created a cool, dusty rose, smokey eye that softened and tied together the entire makeup look.

However, knowing that Michelle’s personal favourite concealer is Clé de Peau’s Beauté Concealer Stick ($93.46 from Cult Beauty), we were bracing ourselves for the inevitable reality that said eye look would cost us a fortune to recreate — and we weren’t wrong.

Sabrina used a complete kit of Charlotte Tilbury makeup on Michelle for the red carpet event, and her eye look alone cost $241.

Affordable alternatives for Charlotte Tilbury makeup

Finding affordable alternatives for Charlotte Tilbury’s The Feline Flick Liquid Eyeliner ($48 from Charlotte Tilbury), Exagger-Eyes Liner Duo ($48 from Charlotte Tilbury), and Exagger-Eyes Volume Mascara ($48 from Charlotte Tilbury) is easy enough — there’s no shortage of quality liquid eyeliner, eye pencils, and mascara options at the drugstore.

But searching for something similar to Charlotte’s Super Neutral Palette Of Beautifying Eye Trends ($97 from Charlotte Tilbury) proved to be more difficult.

Initially we ummed and ahhed over neutral palettes from Revolution and Maybelline, but ultimately, they weren’t quite right.

We thought one of our favourite budget-friendly eyeshadow palettes — the Australis Up In Smoke Eyeshadow Palette ($21.95 from Australis) — might prove to be a match. And although the colour palette was similar, there just weren’t enough matte finish eye shadows in the 12-pan palette for our liking.

Finally, after searching high and low, we remembered that ColourPop Cosmetics and their wildly affordable makeup palettes exist, and we found what we needed almost instantly in the form of ColourPop’s Of Quartz Smokey Eyeshadow Palette ($14 from ColourPop Cosmetics).

The affordable nine pan palette features a combination of creamy matte, matte sparkle, and shimmering metallic finish eyeshadows with an unmistakeably cool undertone, just like the Super Neutral palette from Charlotte Tilbury.

You’ll also spot a mix of almost identical shades in the compact, including Charlotte’s No.9 Diamond Dimension, which is what we suspect Sabrina used on Michelle’s eyes for the Oscars. The cool pink champagne shade bears a striking resemblance to Mine Games and Transform from the ColourPop palette.

How to recreate Michelle’s eye makeup

We suspect Sabrina packed the shimmer finish eyeshadow onto Michelle’s lids with a flat, firm brush to enhance the colour payoff, and blended the edges with a fluffier brush for a seamless finish.

It’s also very obvious that Sabrina accentuated Michelle’s lash line with a black liquid liner for the glamorous event, but you could easily transform it into an office appropriate makeup look by swapping the liner out and pressing one of the palette’s cool-toned taupe shades into the lash line with a smudger brush instead, if you’re so inclined.
