Winning Moments: PNW Photo Contest captures local beauty and talent

From misty mountains to dynamic coastal wildlife, the Pacific Northwest’s natural splendor takes center stage in the winning images of First Fed’s 2025 Proudly PNW Photo Contest.

Now in its fourth year, the annual contest drew nearly a thousand entries from community members across Western Washington, each offering a personal lens on the places, wildlife and quiet moments that make our region so special. The top submissions were selected for their originality, composition and ability to capture the spirit of the PNW.

The winning photographs will be featured in First Fed’s 2026 calendar, which will be available for free at First Fed branches starting after Thanksgiving, while supplies last. The calendar, returning this year by popular demand, is a visual celebration of regional pride and local creativity.

“We’re continually inspired by the way our community sees the world,” said Abby Sill, Associate Director of Design at First Fed. “These photos tell stories of everyday wonder – from a peaceful paddle at sunrise to the surprise of seeing an orca surface alongside a flock of seabirds.”

This year’s Grand Prize went to “Calm Waters on a Lake” by Daniel Joyce, whose serene composition – featuring glassy still waters and glowing mountains in the distance – captured the quiet majesty of the Pacific Northwest.

His winning photo, taken at Lake Crescent Lodge in Port Angeles, will be featured on the cover of the 2026 calendar.

The stunning January photo in the 2026 calendar was captured by Greta Nehrenberg at the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge, where she photographed a flock of snow geese soaring through the sky – perfectly framed by the moon in the background.

The breathtaking image was a remarkable blend of instinct, timing and a little bit of luck.

“I totally got lucky!” Greta recalled. “I heard the snow geese overhead, zoomed in quickly and shot. I didn’t even realize the moon was in the frame until I looked at the screen.”

A lifelong photography enthusiast who never hikes without her camera, Greta was stunned by the unexpected result. “It always feels great to get a good shot,” she said, “but this one was particularly exciting.”

The Fan Favorite prize, chosen by public vote, was “Pond Life” by Christine Harmon, a close-up moment of nature near Port Angeles, brimming with charm and reflection.

A Community Tradition

First Fed’s Proudly PNW Photo Contest has become a seasonal tradition, encouraging people of all ages and skill levels to share their love of the Pacific Northwest. In addition to being featured in the calendar, select winners also receive cash prizes and recognition across First Fed’s website and social media channels.

“We’re continually inspired by the level of community participation each year,” said Donya Alward, Director of Engagement at First Fed. “It’s truly a pleasure to celebrate and showcase the creative talent within our region. We can’t wait to deliver the stunning calendars featuring these winning photos to our branches for everyone to enjoy.”
