Funeral homes also note the increasing number of community members who live alone with no surviving family and limited financial resources. When a person dies without assets or next of kin, local governments may intervene through taxpayer-funded indigent programs.
These programs typically cover only the most basic services, including direct cremation with no memorial or viewing. According to state law, if no authorized person is available to sign required paperwork, the deceased must be held for 45 days before deposition may occur. After cremation, the remains are handled according to state regulations.
