Planning ahead: How prearranged funerals ease emotional and financial burdens for loved ones

Sequim funeral home encourages early planning to ensure wishes are met

Talking about the importance of funeral planning remains an uncomfortable subject for many, but funeral professionals at Sequim Valley Chapel say delaying the conversation can lead to complications for loved ones later on. While most people have preferences about whether they want to be buried, cremated or pursue a ‘green’ alternative such as terramation, many put off making formal arrangements.

Sequim Chapel’s Licensed Funeral Director, Erick Scheiderman emphasizes that not addressing final wishes won’t prevent death from occurring – it only increases the risk of confusion and hardship for surviving family members. Without prearranged plans in place, loved ones may struggle both emotionally and financially to determine how to honor the deceased.

“When someone passes away without a plan, their family is left to make difficult decisions in a time of grief,” Sheiderman says. “They may be unsure of the person’s wishes, or they might not have the means to provide the type of service their loved one would have wanted.”

Failing to preplan can result in family members guessing about important decisions – such as whether the individual preferred burial or cremation, or what kind of service to hold. In some cases, costs associated with burial plots, caskets for cremation services become a financial burden. Preplanning allows individuals to make those choices in advance, easing the strain on those left behind.

Options for individuals without family or resources

Funeral homes also note the increasing number of community members who live alone with no surviving family and limited financial resources. When a person dies without assets or next of kin, local governments may intervene through taxpayer-funded indigent programs.

These programs typically cover only the most basic services, including direct cremation with no memorial or viewing. According to state law, if no authorized person is available to sign required paperwork, the deceased must be held for 45 days before deposition may occur. After cremation, the remains are handled according to state regulations.

To help prevent these scenarios, Sequim Chapel offers flexible pre-payment options, some as low as $25 per month. These plans allow individuals to arrange services that reflect their preferences while avoiding financial hardship.

Prearranging final arrangements is more than a practical step – it’s a way for individuals to maintain control over how they are remembered. Sheiderman encourages community members to consider it a gift to their families and themselves.
