Personalized care when it’s needed most: A day in the life of a Sequim funeral director

Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel has helped the local community honor their loved ones for over 50 years

Every day is different at Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel and as a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer with more than 14 years of experience, Erick Scheiderman has seen a lot.

“Working in this calling you never know what the day will bring,” Scheiderman says.

As a full-service funeral home offering a diverse range of services from simple cremation to natural organic reduction and traditional burials, the staff are often handling day-to-day tasks such as meeting with families to discuss arrangements, preparing decedents for viewing and administrative duties. Then they get the call from a family member, caregiver, hospital or county coroner notifying that someone’s loved one has passed.

Once a call is received, the funeral home staff gathers basic but essential information about the deceased and their location and dispatches their professional transfer specialists to bring the decedent into their care in a dignified manner.

When not answering calls, the team is often found supporting families, helping them to navigate the reality that their loved one has passed. Providing personalized care begins with an arrangement conference.

“Our goal at Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is to connect with our families on a personal level and build a supportive relationship before making what are often difficult decisions,” Sheiderman says.

That begins with sitting down with survivors and exploring their needs and fulfilling the desired wishes of their loved one. In this meeting, the primary focus is to gather demographic information so that death certificates can be processed in a timely manner, discuss the available service and merchandise options and guide families through the various ways they can best memorialize and celebrate their loved one.

Because grief is a process, Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel provides ongoing support to its families through their Aftercare Program, where the team contacts families a month after the service to check on their wellbeing and offer continued support such as grief counseling resources. Families also receive text messages on important dates such as birthdays and anniversaries as part of the ongoing aftercare.

After 14 years taking care of thousands of families providing comfort and guidance to them during the often-difficult times that follow a loved one’s passing, Scheiderman highlights the heightened level of compassion Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel provides families.

As a seasoned funeral director, Scheiderman understands that each person who calls the chapel or walks through the doors is likely in need of emotional support. Recognizing that, the priority becomes providing families with a sense of reassurance, that they know they picked the right funeral home that will care about their individual needs.
