A behind-the-scenes look at preparing cemeteries to honor veterans

For months ahead of Memorial Day, a team of two meticulously prepares the grounds.

As the seasons change, a small but dedicated team works diligently behind the scenes to prepare Sequim View, Dungeness, and Mount Angeles cemeteries for a time of reflection and remembrance.

While visitors may see only the pristine, Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel, Funeral Director Cathleen McCormick notes that “the beauty of these grounds is no accident – it’s a labor of love, respect and dedication to those who served.”

At Sequim View Cemetery, Mount Angeles Memorial Park and Dungeness Cemetery, a two-person crew spends weeks meticulously readying the grounds. It starts with extensive mowing and trimming, ensuring every pathway is clear and every resting place is cared for.

As winter fades, storm debris is cleared away, making room for the fresh greenery of spring—a season of renewal that also brings a time of remembrance. The work is both physically demanding and deeply meaningful, each task a quiet tribute to those who served their country.

Beyond daily upkeep, local organizations play a vital role in preparing for the upcoming day of honor. The Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and the Daughters of the American Revolution coordinate flag placements and a small memorial service at Mount Angeles Memorial Park and Sequim View Cemetery.

Each flag represents a life dedicated to service, and ensuring that no veteran is overlooked remains a priority. Families of veterans who do not receive a flag are encouraged to contact the cemetery office, where the office manager works to ensure their loved ones are properly honored.

This year, a meaningful addition enhances the landscape. Three new niche banks now stand around the flagpole in the Veterans’ Circle, where the annual service takes place. Engraved with service emblems, these structures provide additional space for veterans while serving as a focal point of commemoration.

To recognize this special time, the cemetery is offering a limited opportunity for those interested in securing a niche in these new banks. Those seeking more information can contact the Sequim View Cemetery (360) 452-6255 and speak directly with the funeral director for support.

With Memorial Day on May 26, visitors stepping onto the grounds may not see the countless hours of effort poured into every detail, they can feel the deep respect and gratitude woven into each blade of grass and every carefully placed flag.

This Memorial Day, take a moment to appreciate not only those who served but also those who make these places of remembrance truly special.

Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is honored to serve the communities of Clallam, Jefferson, and surrounding counties. For more information, call 360-683-5242 or visit sequimvalleychapel.com.
