The Joyce Daze winners — by a whisker

JOYCE — A total of 21 contestants competed in the Joyce Daze Beard and Mustache Competition on Saturday.

Competitors, judged by Clallam County Commissioner Mike Doherty, D-Port Angeles, international mustache competitor Jeff Well and retired teacher-librarian Gary Childers, hailed from California and eight cities in Washington, event organizers said.

The winners:

* Goatee division: first place, Greg Smith, Belfair; second place, Syd Nunez, Bremerton; third place, Kevin Barker, Port Angeles.

* Mustache division: first place, Eric Tobin, Port Angeles; second place, Bruce Roe, Bremerton; third place, Julia Fifer (wearing a false mustache), Joyce.

* Beard division: first place, Burke Thomas Kenny, Olympia; second place, Phil Olsen, Tahoe City, Calif.; third place, Edward Angelbeck; Port Orchard.

* Grand champion: Jack Passion, Walnut Creek, Calif.

The divisional first place winners received axes engraved and carved by Roy Scott.

The grand champion received a statue carved by Eric Berson of Rough Creations Carvings.

Sponsors for the event were Armstrong Marine, Bo Baggins Daycare, Port Angeles Speedway, Rite Brothers Aviation, Rough Creations Carving and Whiskey Creek Beach Resort.
