Port Angeles celebrates its heritage this weekend

The fifth annual Heritage Weekend will be held this weekend in Port Angeles.

The theme for this year’s event is “Our Maritime History” and will be highlighted by a Coast Guard search and rescue exhibition on the waterfront by City Pier.

The Coast Guard will also have a chase boat on display at the pier and area tribes will have displays as well.

There will be historic walking tours of the downtown area with a visit to the “underground.” These tours will start every half hour starting at 10 a.m. with the last beginning at 4 p.m. on Saturday and starting at 10 a.m. Sunday with the last tour beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tours of the lower Elwha dam will run every 1½ hours starting at 10 a.m. Saturday with the last leaving at 4 p.m. and at 10 a.m. with the last leaving at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. These yours are limited to United States citizens and ID must be shown when purchasing tickets.

Driving tours of the historic homes of Port Angeles, with local historian June Robinson acting as host and matron of honor, will go out every two hours starting at 10 a.m. with the last leaving at 4 p.m. on Saturday and beginning at 10 a.m. with the last starting at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tours of the clock tower at the Clallam County courthouse will be on Saturday at 1 p.m. only. There is limited space.

All tours begin at the atrium of Landing mall, 115 E. Railroad Ave. Tickets will be sold at the atrium only.

The Discovery Center in the Landing mall will host narrations of various shipwrecks in the area.

There will be displays on the City Pier, including a 25-foot fast patrol boat from the Coast Guard and local tribal canoes.

The Dream Machines will have a car show on Front Street from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
