Duathlon, 5K races set for Sequim this Sunday

The duathlon starts with a 5K on the Dungeness Recreational Area Road and Trail, then transitions to a 21.6-mile bike ride.

SEQUIM — Bike and run, run or simply enjoy the walk.

It’s up to you at the inaugural Great Northwest Duathlon and 5K, slated for a 9 a.m. start time Sunday at 72 Lotzgesell Road in Sequim.

The duathlon starts with a 5K on the Dungeness Recreational Area Road and Trail, with the sights and sounds of the Strait of Juan de Fuca in the background.

The duathlon transitions to a 21.6-mile bike ride throughout the edges of Sequim and Dungeness. The event finishes with another 5K run back to the start/finish line.

Those not up for a duathlon are invited to join races for a 5K run/walk for all ages and levels of ability on the same course as the duathlon.

Cost for duathlon individuals is $75. Duathlon team members can enter for $40 per person.

For the 5k run/walk, entry is $30. Youths 16 and younger receive a $10 discount on the 5K entry.

All entries include a commemorative shirt.

Kraig Kyllo, a Port Angeles runner/bicyclist, is the race director for the inaugural event.

He envisioned the event about 18 months ago as a triathlon and has been trying to figure out how to make it work in this area.

Kyllo said he mapped out events elsewhere such as at Lake Crescent, but logistics for biking made the area unusable.

While watching the World Powerman Championships, he learned of duathlons and felt that might be a better fit for the area. His goal is for around 30 people for the duathlon and 10 for the 5K.
