LETTER: Support Sequim measures

I recently attended a Sequim School District information session about the upcoming levy and bond ballot measures.

Superintendant Regan Nickels and building/maintenance director Michael Santos explained the scope and costs of each measure, put together by a long-range facilities planning group comprised of school families, community members and school staff.

The levy is not a new tax; it must be renewed every four years and covers educational expenses that are not covered by the state.

The construction bond is new and is intended to fund the replacement or improvement of outdated, deteriorating facilities as well as needed improvements to Greywolf Elementary, our multi-use athletic facility and our transportation department infrastructure.

What was detailed in the hour-long presentation was an overview of the older systems at both Helen Haller Elementary and Sequim High schools, leaving them highly vulnerable to systemic failures and problematic, cumbersome and expensive repairs when problems arise.

We also learned about deficits at Greywolf, the sports fields and transportation challenges.

Before attending the presentation, I was aware that Helen Haller and the high school were old buildings. But hearing about their deteriorated conditions so impacted me that I am writing this letter to encourage all voters in the Sequim School District to vote approval of both measures.

Questions? Contact the district office or plan to attend one of the remaining sessions listed on the district’s website.

This election is of vital importance to ensure the quality of our educational system.

Every vote counts.
