LETTER: Sorry, MAGA

Sorry, MAGA

Sorry, Donald, but America is not back; it has fallen backward.

By punishing our friends with tariffs, abandoning our longstanding allies and turning our backs on even the most meager assistance to the world’s most needy, America has abdicated its greatness.

Sorry, MAGA. The world is less safe for all.

Social liberalism has faltered, overwhelmed by primal fears stoked by a rich narcissist supported by an excessively wealthy few whose driving goal is yet more power and wealth.

Their threats have paralyzed those whose authority was designed by our founding fathers to limit such power.

Our history tells us that an earlier era of political machines and industrial barons was rife with corruption and was neither comfortable nor fulfilling for the working class.

Sorry again, MAGA.

Intellectualism, by which I mean advances in medicine and other sciences, produced knowledge that elevated society from those darker times, but it, too, has become fashionable to attack.

Discounting, or outright ignoring this knowledge, ensures we make an about-face and are headed backward toward a less-enlightened period.

Overpopulation and increasingly frequent and more widespread weather catastrophes shorten the time we have to recover toward a brighter future.

Just as our humanity is expressed in our generosity and acceptance of others, America’s greatness is rooted in valuing all people and using our collective wealth and power to both demonstrate, by example, that democracy provides a sustainable social basis for such humanity and to provide assistance and security to those countries attempting to achieve the same.
