I am heartened that thousands of Republicans in our country are stepping up to defeat Donald Trump in November, acknowledging that another Trump term may destroy American democracy as we know it.
On Aug. 13, more than 60,000 people joined a call organized by the newly formed national organization Republicans for Harris.
Each of the 13 presenters on the call stressed that it has never been more critical to place country over party in this year’s presidential race.
One of the organizers of the group, Olivia Troye, a former White House official under Trump, said, “As a first-hand witness to the chaos of the Trump presidency, I can say this: We cannot go back. You are not alone. We get that it is not easy to make this choice. But our commitment to the constitution, the integrity of American democracy, to the rule of law, to sane, rational governance, to basic human decency and civility are transcendent, especially at this critical moment.”
Another presenter, Chris Vance, former Republican Congressman and GOP chair for the state of Washington, supports Harris.
He believes that, unlike Trump, Harris will stand with the constitution and the rule of law.
All of the presenters on the call stressed that they remain committed to the Republican party but will not accept the extreme and dangerous agenda of Donald Trump and his MAGA devotees.
They believe that the only way to save their party is to, first, defeat Trump.
Then they can begin to rebuild.
