Women’s health essentials

You may always make sure your lippy is in check, but are you on top of your health and wellbeing? We don’t always think about paying attention to areas of our body that matter most, and failure to keep up with regular health checks can result in bigger issues that could have been avoidable. Taking care of your health and your body can not only assist in making you feel better and fresher, but it can also potentially save your life.

Get abreast of any issues

Women of all ages should be conducting breast checks on themselves every few weeks. If you have a family history of breast cancer, or are over the age of 50, then it’s even more important to check your breasts regularly. You don’t need to be a trained professional – it’s as simple as having a feel around when you’re in the shower, but the benefits of getting to know your body so that you can catch any potential issues early are immeasurable. Remember, don’t just check your breasts – check under your arms and around the side of your breasts to ensure there are no lumps near your lymph glands. It’s just a small task that could help to prevent a big issue. And if you do happen to discover any unusual lumps or bumps, make sure you see your GP as soon as you can to address any potential healthy issues quickly.

Be pap happy

Just like you’d conduct regular breast checks, it’s important for women to be on top of their vaginal health too. A pap smear every two years (or every six to 12 months if you have a history of cervical cancer in your family, or have had irregular pap smear results in the past) is vital for all women as soon as they’re sexually active, or otherwise once they’re over the age of 21. Not only can pap smears help to identify signs of irregular or pre-cancerous cells, which can lead to cervical cancer, but they can also help with the detection of STDs and infections. And as in most cases when it comes to your health, the sooner detected, the better.

Take care ‘down there.’

Though very common with women of all ages at one time or another, vaginal infections can be irritating and uncomfortable. Luckily, they can generally be treated and prevented fairly easily. Using a pH-balanced feminine wash like Vagisil Feminine Wash is gentle enough to be used daily and can help to keep your sensitive areas free from irritation and infection. If you experience symptoms such as itching or burning, a thick, white discharge, or redness and swelling of the vagina, you may be suffering from vaginal thrush. Vagisil Cream has been formed to provide prompt, temporary relief from the discomforts of itching and burning in the vaginal area. Apply to the external area of the vagina for soothing relief, but if symptoms persist or worsen, you should see your GP.

Feel fresh for longer

And while we’re on the topic of your nether region, do you often feel yourself becoming a little less than fresh ‘down there’? It’s okay, you’re not alone – and you’ll be pleased to know, there is a solution! It’s CAREFREE® ACTI-FRESH® liners and they’re set to be your new best friend. These everyday extra-breathable liners are designed with an air-infused cover and special micro-airflow holes to draw moisture away from the body, eliminating odour and making you feel dry and confident. Plus CAREFREE® ACTI-FRESH® liners are so super-slim you can wear one every day (not just when you have your period) and you won’t even notice it’s there.

Get more of the good stuff

In addition to the parts you can see, it’s also important to look after your insides by eating right and upping your vitamin intake. For a balanced diet, these foods should be consumed daily:  fruits, vegetables, bread, cereals and grains, dairy, meat, poultry, fish and eggs. In other words – a lot! Supplements are a great way to help fill any holes in our daily vitamin intake. Supplements such as fish oil are a great source of omega 3 fatty acids, which are integral to the growth, development and effective functioning of your body. Plus, omega 3’s also help to promote healthy skin and hair and assist in the prevention and treatment of diseases like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and even breast cancer. We recommend: Blackmores Fish Oil 1000, from $20.45, 1800 803 760
