How To Get Rid Of Split Ends

How to get rid of split ends

Wish as we might, there are no natural remedies that will fix our perpetually split ends — there go our dreams of looking like Demi Moore. So, we asked an expert in the know, how to best handle the common problem.

Enter: Jaye Edwards. The hair expert who founded Edwards&Co and Jaye Haircare, and even helped us to figure out if we would suit a fringe or not.

“Unfortunately there’s no magic fix for split ends, but you can make them less noticeable and stop new ones from popping up,” Jaye tells us. “With the right tricks and a solid hair care routine, you can keep your hair looking smooth and healthy, even if those pesky ends try to stick around.”

Can you actually repair split ends?

There is no method to repair split ends, says the hair expert.

But there are definitely a number ways that you can make the damage look less noticeable, and practices you can implement in your hair care routine to prevent them.

“The only way to get rid of split ends is to cut them — getting regular trims will promote new hair growth — while cleaning up the ends,” Jaye explains.

If you’re not ready for a haircut yet though, he recommends using a hydrating hair mask or hair oil — like the viral Shiseido Fino Mask ($19.99 from Amazon Australia) or Kérastase’s recently reformulated Elixir Ultime Hair Oil ($55 from Oz Hair & Beauty) — in the meantime.

Cutting down on heat styling, and incorporating scalp care products to protect the health and integrity of your hair will also help to improve the overall foundation of your strands too. Personally, we really rate user-friendly scalp scrubs or chemical exfoliants like Alpha-H’s Healthy Exfoliating Scalp Treatment ($35.96 from Oz Hair & Beauty) for a fresh head.

What’s the best way to remove split ends?

“The best way to remove split ends is to get them trimmed,” he advises. “There are a few different cutting techniques (think: micro-trims or hair dusting), which your stylist can recommend for cleaning up the ends while maintaining length.”

“However, once hair is split and dead, it cannot be repaired,” Jaye tells us.

What’s the best way to prevent split ends?

A good hair care routine is key to preventing split ends, says Jaye.

“First of all, you need to get regular trims,” he explains. “Think: every six to eight weeks — or 12 weeks if you have low maintenance hair.”

“Cut down on heat styling, avoid over washing your hair, avoid tight hairstyles, and try out a silk pillowcase,” he went on to say.

Jaye also recommends investing in a good quality shampoo and conditioner: “My favourites are the O&M Hydrate & Conquer Shampoo ($42.95 from Oz Hair & Beauty), and O&M Hydrate & Conquer Conditioner ($42.95 from Oz Hair & Beauty).”

“I also love O&M’s The Power Base Protein Masque ($45.95 from Oz Hair & Beauty) — this is a saviour for damaged hair — it’s intense dual action treatment works to restore your mane from within,” he explains. “It contains Rice Protein, which helps to strengthen the hair and boost fullness and growth, and Apricot Kernel Oil to moisturise and nourish the hair’s exterior.”

  1. Split ends are a constant battle for me, my hair is very porous with mid shaft splits as well. I have a silk pillowcase but I think eating more protein is helping my hair grow healthier.
