Keep Safe Through Cyclone Alfred!

As I sit safely in my Sydney home watching the news my thoughts are with those in Southeastern Queensland & Northeastern NSW. I hope you’re all able to stay safe from Cyclone Alfred.

I was a child in 1974 when Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin. That Christmas was traumatic as I was confronted with such shocking news footage. I didn’t want my mother to know how upset I was, so I went down to our back paddock & cried hysterically. It’s well worth starting a conversation with small children when natural disasters, such as this, strike.

I hope everyone & their families remain safe.

I’ve only just seen this – all went well in East Ballina. It looked like it was heading directly towards us at one stage and we did get some extreme winds on the Friday night but I was still swimming in the pool on Friday as there was a bit of a lull in the wind and it was 27 degrees so I jumped in. I still had to walk my husky and she didn’t mind the wind at all. I was relieved to wake up on Saturday morning to just a couple of panels of one of our fences blown over and hubby fixed them up straight away (to keep the husky in!!). It was also good that we didn’t get the downpour of rain that was predicted to be over us (as we are just an hour south of the Goldie). The cyclone somehow moved north and rained up north instead.

Salvos/Vinnies are currently taking cash donations at the counter and a receipt will be given if you want to claim as tax deductiable. Just make sure that it is put under Natural Disasters or tell them who you want it for .

My friend lives in Redcliffe which was in the eye of the storm, I was so petrified for her but she came out relatively unscathed thank goodness.

I’m south west of Brisbane it didn’t flood in my part where on a hill but there’s bush around us and a huge tree fell on the fence down the road we lost electricity for 48 hours and water for a day and hot water for 3 days I used my bbq to boil water in a saucepan for a cuppa and our dinners then had to clean out my fridge and used brought ice put it in leak proof bags in the crisper to keep dairy cold it was an experience and I was kept on my toes all the way through it I thought it would be worse but it wasn’t that bad here the wind and the rain seemed abit tamer than initially expected

I really enjoyed getting my electricity back on those cold showers only allowed me to shower as fast as I could so I had to just shampoo my hair my hair didn’t look as lively as it usually does and the heat didn’t come back on for 24 hrs what a pain anyway my hair and I survived

I’m not far from Meedee and initial impact was for us all but somehow it changed and went Gold Coast and Brisbane and Northern NSW. With all the warnings though we were able to prepare by bringing in outdoor furniture in, pots that would lift in the wind or save some from too much water. The days turned out to be just cloudy and still muggy here.

Schools were closed around here (bet the kids loved that), people did panic buy but we had been to our usual shopping the week before a cyclone was even thought of. It only got wet here on Sunday and Monday, heavy rain but nothing to worry about. At least it cooled down the humidity we have here.

Today, sun out, muggy so just would be nice if some Autumn weather would come now.
Hope all the Goldies and other members were okay with the Cyclone though. Really hit hard with places flooding, even up here.

I hope our Northern NSW and QLD Members are as okay as they can be.

Misfortune8, I am so sorry that you felt you had to hold that in. I have endured some hardships with family and felt the need to keep stuff in too.

Relating to cyclones my Dad helped rebuild Darwin after Cyclone Tracey. He was in the army.

      Thanks, @Perthchick! ❤

The ADF are a Godsend in crises like this, so good on your dad!

I’m concerned about those ADF personnel injured in that collision – I hope they’ll all be OK.

Dad is late 70’s and still preferred his house and my sisters with the motto “prepare for the worst, hope for the best”. Yes, it’s always concerning when the helpers are injured. I hope we hear from more of our members soon and that they are okay.
