Ethical Dilemma: Aussie-Owned but Foreign-Made Vs Foreign-Owned but Aussie-Made?

Aussie-owned & made is my preference, but when that’s not possible, what to do?

I get a kick when I unexpectedly read “Made in Australia” on some foreign-owned brands’ products, such as Schwarzkopf, TRESemmé, Jergens, Dove or Hawaiian Tropic.

But should I continue to support Lady Jayne, Manicare, Justice Professional, 1000Hour, Skin Physics, Swisspers, Dr Lewinn’s, &c? – All great Aussie companies that manufacture some or all of their products overseas.*

If an Aussie-owned & made product is not available, which compromise would you make – Aussie-owned but foreign-made, or foreign-owned but Aussie-made? Does the country of manufacture matter to you?

* I understand that Australia can’t compete financially with the cheaper manufacturing & labour costs of many countries.

This topic was pending moderation so long that I thought it had disappeared!

When I buy Schwarzkopf products, which were made in Australia, for example, I know my purchase DIRECTLY supports Aussie jobs. But I wonder if buying a Lady Jayne hair clip makes any difference to buying an identical cheapie at a discount dollar shop?

Country of manufacture does not matter to me at all. Very little is actually manufactured in Australia. We surrendered our rights to foreign manufacturers a long time ago. I work with a lot of brands and they repeatedly tell me it is simply not realistic to pay for the costs of local production and manufacture. In most cases, there is little government R&D support and we do not have the infrastructure because our government does not invest in it enough.

Aussie-owned & made is also my preference. If I can’t get them I have a select few Countries of Origin I will buy from including USA, France, Germany & South Korea.
I was emailed a survey by NIVEA a few months ago and I voiced this to them because they too are thinking of manufacturing overseas rather than Oz even though Beiersdorf (Parent Company) is headquartered in Germany.
