Volunteers needed for Jefferson County fairgrounds cleanup

PORT TOWNSEND — Volunteers are invited to help spruce up the Jefferson County Fairgrounds on Saturday and Sunday.

The weekend cleanup will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Work will upgrade the grounds for the annual fair on Aug. 12-14.

On the last day of the fair, a Washington State Fair commissioner will evaluate the groups, said Danny McEnerney, fair manager, in a press release.

“This is our chance to show them we love this place and we love putting on a county fair that comes from the heart. A positive evaluation equals continued state funding,” he said.

Despite a two-year hiatus, much of the grounds are in top shape thanks to the maintenance crew and volunteers, he said.

Teams of people will remove the contents of two buildings, remove staples and clean/blow, and make small repairs.

In addition, pressure washing is needed in many places. Those with pressure washers are asked to bring their own, since the fairgrounds has only two.

Also, there are a couple of plumbing and carpentry projects to be done, as well as moving items to dumpsters and general cleanup, McEnerney said.

Volunteers will receive free fair passes for four hours of time. Food and drinks will be provided.
