Solo guitarist to pluck his strings Saturday in Coyle Concerts in the Woods series

Musical series continues this weekend with Ryan Ayers.

COYLE — Solo guitarist Ryan Ayers will perform Saturday evening at the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center as part of the ongoing Concerts in the Woods series.

“I hosted Ryan Ayers in April 2013 on Bainbridge Island and instantly loved his unique guitar compositions,” said Norm Johnson, Coyle concerts founder.

Ryan Ayers is a classically trained instrumental guitarist using that difficult fingerstyle on a steel string guitar “to produce the most delightful music,” Johnson said.

“His delicately played melodies are truly an art form and need the quiet space of a ‘listening room’ like the Coyle Community Center to be experienced,” Johnson continued.

“His original moody music carries the listener off to distant places in time and space where you have never traveled before. It will definitely be an evening well spent for the guitar-lover who enjoys the pure sounds of a single steel string guitar played by the hands of an expert.”

The performance is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. at the community center, 923 Hazel Point Road.

Admission to the all-ages show is by donation.

Complimentary cookies and coffee will be offered at intermission.

During his performances, Ayers mixes together classical technique with accessible song forms and structures, according to his biography.

Ayers began playing guitar at the age of 13. He attended Loyola Marymount University and graduated with degrees in classical guitar performance and recording arts.

It was there that he began his studies with classical guitarist Martha Masters.

An active composer for more than 10 years, Ayers released his first record of 10 original pieces for guitar entitled “ermita” in 2011.

In 2012, he published the corresponding sheet music and tablature. These pieces employ classical guitar technique to explore the reaches of steel string and finger style guitar.

The community center is located at the southern tip of the Toandos Peninsula and is operated by the Jefferson County Parks and Recreation District with help from area residents.
