Second Weekend Art Event set in downtown Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Art and rock ‘n’ roll will mingle seamlessly this weekend during the Second Weekend Art Event in downtown Port Angeles.

The recurring art event, taking place the second weekend of each month, was founded about 10 years ago by the Port Angeles Arts Council, a coalition of downtown Port Angeles businesses and art galleries, to bring attention to the culture and variety offered there.

Here’s a cross section of events:

• Bar N9ne, 229 W. First St., at 9 tonight will feature a live performance by Slim and Summers and the Rayndance Kid — with live art by Tom Booth and Cyndy Eaton — as part of 2nd Friday Art Rock.

A $3 cover charge will help support the musicians and artist.

“Slim and Summers and the Rayndance Kid play heart-felt original compositions that make you want to listen and move,” said Dan Lieberman, 2nd Friday Art Rock spokesperson, in a news release.

“They have been playing together for a few years after discovering at a local song circle that they knew and loved a lot of the same tunes. They are always adding original songs including some of Howly Slim’s award-winning compositions. Howly Slim and Sandy Summers and the Rayndance Kid will leave you happy.”

Both Booth and Eaton are making their first appearance as artist-in-residence at Bar N9ne, Lieberman said.

“Tom Booth is coming to us from Port Townsend but has spread his art and inspiration across the map, including stints in Hawaii,” Lieberman said.

“Cyndy Eaton is local to Port Angeles and does metal work and multi-media. At 2FAR, Cyndy plans to get creative with acrylic enamel.”

• Harbor Art Gallery, 110 E. Railroad Ave., from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday will host a public reception for author Brian Buntain, whose book — “Following the Plume” — has recently been published.

Buntain will be present during the reception with copies of his new book.

“Following the Plume” recounts Buntain’s decades long journey through West Virginia in the footsteps of the 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry, better known as Mosby’s Partisan Rangers.

The battalion — a part of the Confederate Army — was formed in June 1863 during the American Civil War, according to www.wvcivilwar.com.

The unit served behind Federal lines in Northern Virginia, conducting guerrilla warfare. It was disbanded in April 1865 after Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union Army Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House.

A retired history teacher, Buntain has been the recipient of national, state and local awards for his pioneering work in education, according to a news release.

An enthusiastic advocate of living history, Buntain has been a presenter for Oregon Trail, Western Frontier and American Civil War programs.

His interest in Col. John S. Mosby began with Saturday morning episodes of “The Gray Ghost” in the 1950s, and research began in earnest in 1988 with the founding of Historic Mosby’s Rangers, according to the news release.

Buntain, also a jeweler, will display his custom designed jewelry during the reception.

“My designs are influenced by adornments from ancient, classical and non-western civilizations and cross-cultural motifs,” Buntain said.

“And, being a native Puget Sounder, I also draw inspiration from the extraordinary environment of the Pacific Northwest. My designs combine an enchanting fusion of textures, hues and natural materials that are at times saucy and sometimes more traditional.”

• Landing Artists Studio, 115 E. Railroad Ave., from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, will host demonstrations by various contributing artists.

Light refreshments will be served.

“The studio has been busy preparing special gifts for the holidays,” said Pamela Dick, an event organizer.

“Come see our hand-made one-of-a-kind ornaments, jewelry, cards, totes, baskets and unique art pieces. As always, the artists are happy to have people watch them work and explain their methods and materials. Come visit this most unique and welcoming space.”

The Landing Artists Studio — located on the first floor of the Landing Mall — is open Friday through Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
