Pulling the strings: Monthly Port Angeles art exhibit showcases new uses for old string instruments

PORT ANGELES — What can artists do with old stringed instruments?

How about, what can’t they do?

During the Second Weekend Art Event, catch a sneak peak of more than three dozen instruments that have been decorated by about 50 local artists as part of the Juan de Fuca Foundation’s Stringed Instrument Art Show.

The instruments will be on display from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Studio Bob, an art gallery/event space located upstairs at 118½ E. Front St.

Refreshments and snacks will be available and the Juan de Fuca Band will provide musical entertainment for the evening. Attendees can vote for their favorite piece, and even place bids for them in a silent auction.

The instruments include guitars, mandolins, violins, a mountain dulcimer, vintage banjos, ukuleles, a Chinese erhu and harps.

The auction benefits the Juan de Fuca Foundation for the Arts, with final bidding completed at a JFFA fundraising event at the Vern Burton Community Center on Jan. 21.

The instruments also will be on display at Studio Bob from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday and from noon to 4 p.m. Dec. 17.

There is also plenty of other stuff going on today and Saturday as part of Second Weekend Art Walk.

The monthly event, taking place the second weekend of each month, was founded about 10 years ago by the Port Angeles Arts Council as a coalition of downtown Port Angeles businesses and art galleries to bring attention to the culture and variety offered there, organizers said.

Here’s a cross section of events:

• Imagine it Framed, 625 E. Front St., from 5 to 7 this evening will host a re-branding event.

Six years ago, Rene and Larry Bauer bought Karon’s Frame Centers from Karon Nichols upon the latter’s retirement, Rene Bauer said.

“We are relaunching as Imagine It Framed with an updated facade and our first-ever website,” she said.

“As owners of this business for six years, we realize we have a strong presence in this community. But our building and sign were in desperate need of updating, a website was long overdue and this was the perfect time to integrate the name we incorporated under over six years ago.”

The Bauers worked with their landlord and the Port Angeles Facade and Signage Grant Program to complete the changes to the storefront, Rene Bauer said.

“The building features new windows and awnings, fresh paint in an eye-popping blue with white trim and updated signage featuring the business name and logo.”

The new website, www.imagineitframedwa.com, showcases the work Imagine It Framed has done and provides information about custom framing and the design process.

• Bar N9ne, 229 W. First St., at 9 tonight will feature a live performance by The Alternators, with a special appearance by Port Angeles artist Jeff Tocher as part of 2nd Friday Art Rock.

The Alternators, of Port Townsend, features George Radebaugh and Peter Evasic who were last on the 2FAR stage in December 2014. The duo performs high-energy acoustic music — a mix of Irish, Zydeco, Gypsy and Django swing, according to a news release.

Throughout the evening, Tocher will paint new pieces inspired by the live music.

A $3 cover charge will help support the musicians and artist.

• Heatherton Gallery, located inside The Landing mall at 115 E. Railroad Ave., from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday will host its annual Christmas exhibit.

In attendance will be past and present artists who have shown their works at the establishment, their family and friends.

The event will include a potluck and is open to the public.

• Landing Artists Studio, 115 E. Railroad Ave., from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday will host art by various contributing artists.

“As always, the artists love to have people watch them work and socialize,” said Pamela Dick of Landing Artists Studio.

“Come visit this most unique and welcoming space, [and] see our Christmas tree filled with hand-made one-of-a-kind ornaments. We also have jewelry, original cards, scarves, totes, baskets and unique art pieces.”
