Musician to tell stories in song Sunday in Coyle

COYLE — Folk and Americana musician Jaspar Lepak, accompanied by her husband, Kale, will perform Sunday afternoon at the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center as part of the ongoing Concerts in the Woods series.

“Jaspar and her husband, Kale, were here June 15, 2013, and I have been trying to get them back ever since,” said Norm Johnson, Coyle concerts founder.

“Jaspar’s lyrics contain beautiful storytelling and her equally beautiful voice is the best way to hear them. People in Coyle remember her and have been waiting for her return.”

The performance is set to begin at 3 p.m. at the community center, 923 Hazel Point Road.

Admission to the all-ages show is by donation.

Complimentary cookies and coffee will be offered at intermission.

A child of the Sonoran Desert, Lepak’s songs are deeply influenced by the many places she has called home — Tucson, Ariz., Minneapolis and currently Seattle, according to her biography.

Lepak started writing songs in 2002 while living in Minneapolis.

Between 2004 and 2009, she recorded five albums, and in the fall of 2009, she moved to Durban, South Africa, with Kale.

Her music found an enthusiastic audience there, and in 2011, she recorded “Forgiving Wind” which Rolling Stone South Africa hailed as an album full of “beauty and original charm.”

Lepak became a Seattle resident in 2012 and released her seventh album, “Wide World,” in April 2014.

She tours frequently between her former homes and her new home in the Pacific Northwest, often accompanied by Kale on accordion and harmonies, as well as other friends she’s found along the way.

The community center is located at the southern tip of the Toandos Peninsula and is operated by the Jefferson County Parks and Recreation District with help from area residents.
