Golden age comes to Sequim with monthly art walk

SEQUIM — All that glitters is gold this evening during First Friday Art walk.

Art Walk is a free self-guided tour that leads participants to local art venues in Sequim on the First Friday of every month.

Art Walk will be from 5 to 8 tonight.

Gold is the color theme of this evening’s Art Walk, said Renne Emiko Brock, who sponsors and produces the event.

“Gold is the color of our star Sol as we celebrate the Winter Solstice and the return of the sun during December,” Brock said.

“The bright, shiny color of gold represents rekindled optimism, kindhearted deeds, admiration, warm festivities, wealth, and lifelong relationships.”

Brock encourages attendees to wear brown attire when exploring the various shops and events.

“As you enjoy an evening on the town with family, friends and guests who join our welcoming community, you will find works of art and folks supporting the option to dress in shades of gold or glittery interpretations of this festive time of year to celebrate illumination, harmony and hope.”

Visit www.sequimart walk.com to download a map of participating venues.

Here’s a cross section of events:

• Blue Whole Gallery, 129 W. Washington St., during Art Walk will host a reception for the artists whose works are incorporated into the gallery’s annual Holiday Group Show set up in the front windows.

• Olympic Theatre Arts, 414 N. Sequim Ave., from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. will host a performance by Toot Sweet.

The group will be decked out in Victorian attire and will pay tribute to the holidays with seasonal and Christmas music.

Toot Sweet includes Nancy Peterson, Mark Holman and Jan Proebstel on clarinet plus Vicky Blakesley on bass clarinet.

“A dance theme will run throughout the evening, so you will be able to tap your toes to a Joplin rag or a Strauss polka,” Blakesley said.

OTA will open its doors at 5 p.m. with a beverage and snack bar available.

• Sequim Spice and Tea, 139 W. Washington St., during Art Walk will host a performance by singer Priscilla Patterson.

Patterson will perform music from her new album, “Wonderful World.”

• Sunshine Café, 135 W. Washington St., during Art Walk will host photographer Cindy Kern.

Kern was raised in rural Montana on a farm and ranch nestled beneath the Pryor Mountains, according to a news release.

Now residing in Sequim, Kern said she loves to explore everything from the mountains to the ocean, with a camera always around her neck.

That Takes the Cake, 171 W. Washington St., during Art Walk will host the Opulent Evening Art Show — a collaborative arts showcase and sale of works by artists Mary Beth Beuke of West Coast Sea Glass, Renne Emiko Brock of Unique as You, Marla Varner of Penny Lane Quilts and Jean Wyatt of J Wyatt Art.

The show is produced by the Burning Down the House Creative Collective.

Beuke is the author of “The Ultimate Guide to Sea Glass.”

Brock creates custom apparel made of her own hand dyed and custom designed fabrics.

Varner specializes in hand dyed fabrics, linens and other specialty fabrics.

Wyatt said she enjoys creating art “that makes me smile and happy when I look at it.”

“It is meant to be colorful, fun, whimsical, unusual and often a little off-beat,” she said.

“For over 25 years, stained glass was my primary form of artistic expression. For the past 12 years, I have found other types of art to express my creative side, including creating acrylic paintings, colored pencil artwork and handmade journals.”

• The Museum and Arts Center, 175 W. Cedar St., during Art Walk will host Childhood Memories, an exhibition of children’s gifts for Christmas.

• The Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St., at 5 tonight will host the City Arts Advisory Commission Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony and Reception.

The holiday tree is decorated with ornaments created by local fourth-grade students to the theme of “What Sequim Means to Me.”

Meet the Sugar Plum Fairy, her prince, and members of the Arabian and Spanish dancers, as the Sequim Ballet performs excerpts from their upcoming performance of “The Nutcracker.”

Wind Rose Cellars, 143 W. Washington St., during Gallery Walk will host a performance by Joy In Mudville, a rock and folk band based in Port Angeles.
