Emergency preparedness, Racial Justice Bookclub planned on Peninsula

Emergency preparedness in La Push and the Racial Justice Bookclub in Chimacum are among Thursday’s activities on the North Olympic Peninsula.

LA PUSH

Family first aid

LA PUSH — Quileute Head Start and the Quileute Tribe will host the fourth annual “Family First Aid Night” from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

The annual open house is at the Akalat Center, 40 Ocean Drive.

The free event features more than 100 presenters from more than 40 agencies with information and demonstrations on a wide range of emergency preparedness topics.

A helicopter, a fire truck, an ambulance and a rescue boat will be outside the center for attendees to view.

A free dinner will be served at 6 p.m., and first aid kits and other emergency items will be raffled off throughout the evening.

Coffee with Comrades

FORKS — All veterans are welcome to Coffee with Comrades from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursdays.

The event is at the Forks VFW 9106 post, 110 S. Spartan Ave.

The coffee time is free.

Bingo night

FORKS — West End Sportsmen will host bingo night at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The fundraiser will be at the club at 243 Sportsmen’s Club Road.

Proceeds will benefit hunter education programs and the annual Kids’ Fishing Day.

CLALLAM BAY — Fifth- and sixth-grade students can meet for cookies, book conversations and hands-on activities from 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Thursday. The free program meets the first Thursday of each month at the Clallam Bay Library, 16690 state Highway 112.

Kiwanis to meet

PORT ANGELES — Richard Sill, Clallam County’s interim administrator, will address a meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Port Angeles at noon Thursday.

The club meets weekly at Joshua’s Restaurant, 113 Del Guzzi Drive.

Sill is the Clallam County human resources director who is serving as interim administrator.

The public is invited to attend the free meeting. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Studium Generale

PORT ANGELES — Nathan Barnes will present “Transgressive Angels” at 12:35 p.m. Thursday.

Barnes’ presentation is part of the free Studium Generale series in the Little Theater at Peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Barnes is an art instructor at Grays Harbor College in Aberdeen.

SEQUIM

Virtual reality

SEQUIM — A virtual reality session is set for 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday.

The session will be at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

Since virtual reality (VR) has potential safety concerns, participants must be 13 or older.

Adult participants must sign a release waiver, and each participant between 13 and 17 must have a parent sign a release waiver.

Gardening lecture

PORT TOWNSEND — Jadyne Reichner will present “Garden Planning with Seed Saving in Mind” from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

The free gardening lecture will be in the Carnegie Reading Room at the Port Townsend Public Library, 1220 Lawrence St.

Reichner of Oatsplanter Seeds will cover the basics of seed saving: planning a garden, the genetics behind seed production, choosing the best seeds to save and how to harvest, clean and store seeds.

Reading series

PORT TOWNSEND — Lauren Davis and Sandra Yannone will each read some of their writing at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The authors are featured in the Northwind Reading series at Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water St.

Suggested donation is $5 per person. Proceeds will benefit the center.

Davis is the author of “Each Wild Thing’s Consent” and the soon-to-be-published “Home Beneath the Church.”

Yannone, who has a doctorate in English from the University of Nebraska, is the author of “Boats for Women.”
