LEWISTON, Idaho — A 58-year-old Sequim man is in police custody in Idaho after he allegedly shot at a Washington State Patrol trooper and another driver earlier this month.
Shawn Johnson was found in Lewiston, Idaho, and an Idaho State Patrol trooper conducted a high-risk traffic stop to arrest him on Aug. 6.
He was booked into the Nez Perce County Jail and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on Aug. 7. Bail was set at $500,000, county staff reported.
Johnson’s next hearing is set for Aug. 29 to review a mental evaluation, staff said.
Idaho State Patrol received a 911 call about 4 p.m. Aug. 6 about a white 2020 GMC Sierra pickup driving erratically southbound on U.S. Highway 95 in Idaho.
A witness said the driver was waving a handgun through the truck’s sunroof, that they heard gunfire while it was in Whitman County in Washington, and that the driver then fired at the caller’s vehicle while driving on Lewiston Hill.
ISP troopers said Johnson allegedly fired a shot from his vehicle toward a Washington State Patrol trooper before going into Idaho.
No injuries were reported.
Johnson may face additional charges in Washington.
The Washington State Patrol could not be reached for comment.
During the arrest and investigation, U.S. Highway 12 was temporarily closed at Third Avenue North in Lewiston.
