Second evaluation set for alleged knife assailant

PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles man charged with stabbing a roommate in the abdomen last April is scheduled to have a mental health evaluation Monday, his attorney said Friday.

John Greystoke’s status/review hearing was reset for April 14, Clallam County Superior Court records show.

Greystoke, 50, is charged with first-degree assault for allegedly stabbing a 40-year-old man who had been staying at his apartment April 24, 2016.

Port Angeles police said the victim’s intestines were exposed from a severe laceration. He recovered from his injuries.

A Western State Hospital psychologist determined last December that Greystoke was competent to stand trial, saying he had the capacity to understand the nature of his case and to assist in his own defense.

Through his attorney, Harry Gasnick of Clallam Public Defender, Greystoke told Superior Court Judge Brian Coughenour on Feb. 24 that he wished to pursue a mental health defense.

Previous trial dates that were set for June 20 and Sept. 19 of last year were stricken to accommodate the first mental health evaluation.

Greystoke’s April 17 trial date was stricken Friday, according to the minutes of the hearing.

Greystoke is being held in the Clallam County jail on $200,000 bail.
