Port Angeles man who bailed out on drug and weapons charges returns to jail

PORT ANGELES — A 26-year-old Port Angeles man who posted $200,000 bond on drug and weapons charges in May is back in jail.

Gerald Neil Walkup, who was charged in April after deputies found the largest ball of black tar heroin some had ever seen, was arrested Tuesday night for investigation of driving with a suspended license.

He posted $1,000 bail Tuesday night for the arrest, but was back in the Clallam County jail Wednesday morning held on $200,000 bond and $20,000 bail, according to Corrections Deputy Don Wenzl.

He appeared in Clallam County District Court on Wednesday morning for the matter, where District Court Judge Rick Porter remanded Walkup back into custody, Wenzl said.

The new bond and bail amounts are in addition to the $200,000 bond Walkup posted in May.

Walkup was next scheduled to appear in Clallam County Superior Court for a status hearing at 1 p.m. today.

A hearing to determine what information is admissible in court is set for July 13 and a 3-day trial has been set to begin July 31.

He was arrested Tuesday night after Port Angeles Police Officer Swift Sanchez found Walkup driving his mother’s car, according to a police report.

Police were looking for the car after a report that a woman was trying to stop a car that was dragging her and yelling “stop you’re not taking my car,” the report said.

Walkup’s mother told police he did not have permission to take the vehicle, but she didn’t want to press charges and get him in trouble, the report said. She told police she was not being dragged or hit by the car.

His mother told police “if police officers tell Gerald not to drive he won’t drive,” according to the report.

Walkup, a convicted felon, is already charged with two counts of possession with intent to manufacture or deliver a controlled substance, heroin and methamphetamine; possession of a stolen firearm; four counts of first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm; and unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon.

He was arrested April 2 after allegedly fleeing deputies and crashing his vehicle in Gales Addition.

Deputies seized 950 grams of heroin, more than 400 grams of meth, four guns, about 20 cellphones, dozens of car keys, 100 ounces of silver and about $9,000 in cash, according to court records.

Deputies also found two loaded AR-15-type rifles, a loaded 9mm handgun, a stolen loaded handgun and a fake gun, according to court records.

Walkup was next scheduled to appear in Clallam County Superior Court for a status hearing at 1 p.m. today.

A hearing to determine what information is admissible in court is set for July 13 and a 3-day trial has been set to begin July 31.

Walkup has two previous felony convictions for drug-related crimes, according to court records.
