Port Angeles man sentenced for assault with strangulation

PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles man has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for assault with strangulation and other crimes, Port Angeles police said.

Travis C. Dahlquist, 33, was sentenced May 3 in Clallam County Superior Court.

He pleaded guilty April 30 to second-degree assault with strangulation and domestic violence, witness tampering and two counts of violation of a protection order, court papers said.

Port Angeles police investigated a report of a domestic violence attack that involved strangulation on Jan. 3.

The victim told police that Dahlquist had poured vodka over her while she was asleep in her car and choked her, according to the affidavit for probable cause.

The victim said Dahlquist was angry with her because she had been talking to security guards at her place of employment.

“(The victim) had red marks around her neck that she showed me, and was very emotional as she described waking up to being attacked,” Officer Luke Brown wrote in his report.

Brown, Officer J.J. Smith and Cpl. Bruce Fernie found Dahlquist hiding in the back of a car and arrested him after a brief struggle, police said.

The other charges filed against Dahlquist were the result of a follow-up investigation involving calls he made to the victim from the Clallam County jail, police said Wednesday.

The 15-month sentenced imposed by Superior Court Judge Brent Basden was the midpoint of a standard sentencing range between 13 months and 17 months, court papers said.
