PORT ANGELES — Shay Clinton Darrow, the Port Angeles man charged with shooting his father to death last month, has been transferred to Western State Hospital for a court-ordered competency evaluation.
Darrow, 28, is charged with first-degree murder-domestic violence and a firearm enhancement in the Jan. 12 death of Clint Leroy Darrow.
Clallam County Superior Court Judge Christopher Melly on Feb. 10 signed an order for Darrow to be evaluated at the state psychiatric hospital in Lakewood under Revised Code of Washington Chapter 10.77 — criminally insane procedures.
Defense attorney John Hayden of Clallam Public Defender told Melly that his client’s mental health condition had been deteriorating since his incarceration.
Darrow, who was described in court documents as a schizophrenic who had stopped taking his medication before the shooting, did not appear in court for his past two hearings Feb. 10 and Thursday.
He was transferred from the Clallam County jail to Western State Hospital on Friday, Corrections Sgt. Darrell Bryant confirmed.
Darrow has a review hearing scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday in Clallam County Superior Court. He has not yet been arraigned.
Port Angeles police said Darrow fired nearly 30 rounds at his father with a semi-automatic .45-caliber pistol in the home they shared at 201 W. Ninth St.
Clint Darrow, who owned Van Goes Gourmet Pizza &Mexican eatery in Port Angeles, was found with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
He was 53.
Shay Darrow is being held on $500,000 bail.
