Police use Taser to subdue fleeing suspect

Port Angeles man held on $50,000 bail

PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles man who allegedly damaged a woman’s shelter while violating a no-contact order was arrested after a police pursuit that ended when an officer deployed a stun gun, city police said.

Cameron Lee George, 26, was booked into the Clallam County jail at 12:46 a.m. Monday for investigation of assault in violation of a court order, unlawful imprisonment, eluding a police vehicle and other crimes after he was stopped by a Taser in a Port Angeles neighborhood, police said.

Clallam County Superior Court Judge Simon Barnhart set George’s bail at $50,000 during his first appearance Monday.

“The court has some significant concerns about safety of others, interference with the administration of justice and also future compliance with court orders and appearances,” Barnhart said in the bail hearing.

Port Angeles police said they were called to a report of a disturbance at a shelter at about 9 p.m. Sunday.

Officers arrived to find broken windows and evidence that a man had violated two domestic violence no-contact orders, police said in a press release.

While responding to the call, officer Sean Ryan spotted a red sedan driven by a man later identified as George going the wrong way on a one-way street.

Ryan used his overhead lights to attempt to stop the Kia Rio, which drove down an alley and though a neighborhood at speeds of 40 to 50 mph, police said.

George failed to stop at numerous stop signs and appeared to be driving in a reckless manner, police said.

The car went into in a thicket of bushes and stopped near the corner of East 10th and South Washington streets. Ryan used his patrol vehicle to pin the sedan.

George climbed out of the driver’s side window and fled on foot, police said. Ryan identified himself as a police officer and gave chase.

“During the chase, the suspect lost balance and fell into some bushes,” police said.

“He continued to resist attempts to subdue him, broke free from officers and again attempted to flee on foot. Officer Ryan was able to deploy and actuate his Taser, and this action stopped the suspect’s flight.”

Ryan and Clallam County Sheriff’s Deputy Tori Middlekauff placed George into handcuffs, police said.

After George was evaluated by paramedics, police obtained a search warrant for George to have a blood draw at Olympic Medical Center. He was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said.

George was arrested for investigation of third-degree malicious mischief with domestic violence, two counts of assault in violation of a court order, obstructing a law enforcement officer, driving under the influence, second-degree driving with a suspended license, eluding a police vehicle, unlawful imprisonment with domestic violence and fourth-degree assault with domestic violence, police said.

The Clallam County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office will consider filing formal charges against George at his next court appearance scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday.
