New trial date set for Port Angeles man accused of stabbing roommate

PORT ANGELES — John Greystoke, a Port Angeles man charged with stabbing a roommate in the abdomen more than a year ago, has a new trial date.

Greystoke’s first-degree assault trial was rescheduled Friday for July 5, Clallam County Superior Court records show.

Defense attorney Harry Gasnick of Clallam Public Defender told Judge Christopher Melly that he planned to move for an additional competency evaluation for his client, according to the minutes of the hearing.

Greystoke, 50, is alleged to have stabbed a 40-year-old man who had been staying at his apartment on April 24, 2016.

Port Angeles police said the victim’s intestines were exposed from a severe cut. The man recovered from his injuries.

Last December, a Western State Hospital psychologist determined that Greystoke was competent to stand trial because he had the capacity to understand the nature of his case and to assist in his own defense.

Melly on Friday denied Greystoke’s request for a new attorney. A status hearing was set for June 2.

Greystoke is being housed in the Clallam County jail on $200,000 bail.

Trial dates for last June, September and April were stricken for mental health evaluations.
