Sheriff’s office: Man becomes victim of highway robbery, assault after vehicle breaks down

Deputies seek information from public after incident near Joyce

JOYCE — Two people described as “mountain men” were being sought Saturday for reportedly beating and robbing a man whose vehicle had broken down near Joyce on Thursday, the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office said.

The alleged victim reported that his vehicle had broken down on state Highway 112 near milepost 49 when he was approached by two men who had pulled over in a pickup to offer assistance.

“The victim told deputies he refused assistance and began walking back towards his vehicle when he was struck in the back of the head by one of the suspects,” Sheriff’s Sgt. Shaun Minks said in a Friday press release.

“The victim attempted to defend himself from the suspects who were both punching and kicking him.”

One of the men ripped the victim’s wallet from his pocket during the alleged assault, took all of the cash and dropped the wallet, Minks said.

One of the men was described as being in his mid-20s and the other was possibly in his 40s.

“Both males had a ‘mountain man’ type of appearance and one had a long beard,” Minks said.

“The pickup they drove was a midsize pickup, possibly a Ford, unknown color.”

The alleged victim suffered minor injuries and declined medical attention, Minks said.

The robbery was reported at 8:06 p.m. Thursday.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Sheriff’s Dispatch at 360-417-2459 and ask to speak with a deputy.
