PORT ANGELES — A 39-year-old man is being investigated for allegedly bringing drugs into the Clallam County Jail, the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office said.
Nicholas Baker, who is being held at the jail in lieu of $40,000 bond on investigation of theft charges, allegedly smuggled drugs into the facility that were concealed in a body cavity at the time of his arrest, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Clallam County corrections staff conducted multiple searches within a housing unit at the jail on Monday in response to information indicating the possible presence of narcotics, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The tip originated from an inmate who was being relocated due to interpersonal conflicts within the unit. The inmate said drugs were being concealed in another inmate’s cell, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Corrections staff searched the cell and recovered a plastic baggie containing a white crystalline substance suspected to the methamphetamine, the Sheriff’s Office said.
As a precaution, the entire housing unit was placed on lockdown and a comprehensive search of the area was initiated, the Sheriff’s Office said.
During the search, deputies discovered several items that appeared to be narcotics or drug paraphernalia and collected them as evidence, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Baker was identified by deputies at that time.
Inmates in possession of or connected to contraband were issued major infractions under jail policy, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The case has been referred to the Clallam County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for possible charges.
