Second-degree murder charge filed in shooting death of Port Angeles man

PORT ANGELES — A second-degree murder charge was filed Tuesday against a 27-year-old man accused of killing his father Jan. 12 as prosecutors await a mental health evaluation.

Shay Clinton Darrow’s arraignment will be 1:30 p.m. Jan. 27, Judge Christopher Melly ruled.

Darrow is being held in the Clallam County jail on $500,000 bail on the murder charge in the shooting death of his father, Clint Leroy Darrow, in the home the two shared.

Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Michele Devlin is considering filing a charge against Darrow of first-degree murder-domestic violence, which includes premeditation, she said Tuesday after the hearing.

Second-degree murder-domestic violence does not include premeditation.

Devlin said she is waiting for a court-ordered mental health evaluation of Shay Darrow and for police reports on the shooting before she makes a decision.

Iva Johanson, Clint Darrow’s mother, wailed loudly Tuesday afternoon as her grandson was led out of the courtroom. Melly asked that she be assisted out of the room.
