Early morning shooting on West First Street

Unknown if anyone injured

PORT ANGELES — Police are looking for individuals in two vehicles who were involved today in an early-morning shooting in the 300 block of West First Street near Marine Drive.

Deputy Police Chief Jason Viada said it is unknown if there were injuries in the incident, which involved the male driver of a gray SUV ramming a white sedan before a shot was fired.

Police said after the SUV driver parked on the north side of First and went into the Jackpot convenience store shortly before 5:45 a.m., the driver of the sedan parked on the south side of the street in front of the Port of Port Angeles administration building.

Two people from the car approached the SUV, then ran back to the car, police said.

A driver of the SUV drove across First Street and rammed the white sedan.

An occupant of the car responded by firing a single round from a handgun at the SUV, police said.

Both drivers then fled the scene.

“It’s possible somebody committed an assault with a deadly weapon, perhaps the driver of the SUV, or possibly the round was fired in self-defense,” Viada said.

“However, we need to know more about what happened in the parking lot prior to the SUV coming across First Street.

“This is one of those incidents where we’re not ready to label it yet.

“We’ll gather together some more pieces of the puzzle before we make an announcement about what the picture is.”

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call 360-452-4545 and provide information to any officer.
