Deputies pursue leads in suspected arson fires

PORT ANGELES — Deputies investigating two suspected arsons that happened within an hour of each other early last Thursday along state Highway 112 say they are pursuing leads.

However, those leads are weak, according to Sgt. Eric Munger of the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.

“We have people that might know suspects,” he said. “We have some leads, but they’re not real strong.”

He said investigators have yet to determine what caused the fires, although they believe they are connected.

A sedan caught fire at about 2 a.m. on Highway 112 near Dodger Lane, about 5 miles east of Joyce. A section of a mobile home caught fire less than an hour later about 5 miles west of Joyce on Highway 112.

A couple of months ago, an abandoned trailer also caught fire along Highway 112.

The three fires are believed to be related, Munger said.

“There’s no direct evidence tying them together,” he said. “We don’t have a direct link other than they are the same M.O.,” an abbreviation for modus operandi, which translates to method of operation.
