PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles man accused in an hourslong standoff Feb. 3 in Port Angeles will be arraigned Feb. 17 on one count of second-degree assault-domestic violence after appearing in Clallam County Superior Court on Wednesday.
Charles V. Smith, 72, remained Thursday in the Clallam County jail in lieu of $100,000 bail or bond. He is being represented by a public defender.
Smith held officers from both the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office and the Port Angeles Police Department at bay for eight hours with both a pistol and a rifle before pepper spray and pepper balls were deployed.
He surrendered about 10:30 p.m. at his residence in the mobile home park in the 2000 block of U.S. Highway 101 near Monroe Road.
The incident began when a woman told 9-1-1 dispatchers that her husband physically assaulted her and then pointed a firearm at her face in the residence they shared. She was able to flee the dwelling uninjured after deputies arrived.
Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Matthew Roberson requested $100,000 bail and a no-contact order with Smith’s wife because of the potential for another violent crime against not only his wife but also law enforcement as well as interference with justice.
