Opening doors to opportunity: Certifications for businesses

FOR BUSINESSES IN Clallam and Jefferson County, growth often comes down to opportunity. One of the most effective ways to access new opportunities is through government contracting. Every year, federal, state, and local agencies purchase billions of dollars in goods and services, from construction and IT support to catering, landscaping, and professional services. Some of those contracts are set aside specifically for businesses that hold certifications, making them a powerful tool for growth.

In Washington, businesses can pursue certifications at both the state and federal levels. At the state level, the Washington State Office of Minority & Women’s Business Enterprises (OMWBE) offers several certifications designed to help businesses compete for contracts. These include the Minority Business Enterprise (MBE), Women’s Business Enterprise (WBE), and Minority Women’s Business Enterprise (MWBE). As well as the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE), which is often connected to transportation and federally funded projects, the Small Business Enterprise (SBE), and the Veteran-Owned Business (VOB) certifications are also valuable tools for businesses looking to expand into public contracting. Each of these programs increases visibility with agencies seeking diverse suppliers and creates pathways for networking and subcontracting opportunities.

At the federal level, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) administers certifications that give small businesses an edge in competing for federal contracts. These include the 8(a) Business Development Program for socially and economically disadvantaged businesses, the Historically Underutilized Business Zone (HUBZone) program for companies located in specific geographic areas, and the Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) and Economically Disadvantaged WOSB (EDWOSB) certifications. Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB) certification and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) certification are also available, providing contracting advantages for veteran entrepreneurs. These programs open the door to set-aside and sole-source contracts, mentoring opportunities, and valuable connections that can propel a business forward.

While the opportunities are clear, the certification process itself can feel overwhelming. Applications require careful documentation, detailed business information, and close attention to eligibility requirements. That’s where the North Olympic Peninsula APEX Accelerator comes in. Serving Clallam and Jefferson counties, the program provides no-cost advising to businesses interested in exploring government contracting. APEX Accelerator counselors help business owners identify which certifications are the best fit, guide them through the application process, and provide continued support to ensure certifications remain in good standing. Beyond that, they offer training sessions, matchmaking events, and direct connections to contracting officers and prime contractors, helping businesses not only earn certifications but also use them effectively.

Ultimately, certifications are about more than checking a box, they are about creating opportunities. With the right guidance, local businesses can leverage certifications to secure contracts, build strong partnerships, and achieve long-term growth.
