Many of us strive to get ultra-pearly whites, but it seems some are taking the pursuit too far – leading to a warning from an LA expert about the dangers of overbleaching your teeth.
Yep, it turns out there is such a thing as a too-bright smile, with cosmetic dentist Laurence Rifkin saying overbleaching can lead to receding gums and oversensitivity.
Speaking to Yahoo!, he also pointed out that so-called ‘bleachorexia’ could cause irreversible damage as it destroys tooth enamel (which, once lost, is lost forever).
According to Rifkin, too much bleaching can even have a reverse effect, leaving your teeth looking darker (no, thanks).
His advice? If you want to use any sort of bleaching product or over-the-counter whitener, first consult a dentist.
Thankfully, there are also other, less aggressive ways to get whiter teeth. Stop drinking coffee, for one, and work wonders with a whitening toothpaste. We love MacleansExtreme Clean White Toothpaste and Colgate Optic White for teeth cleaning and brightening in one.
Got delicate chompers? Sensodyne Gentle Whitening is formulated for sensitive teeth, but still promotes a megawatt smile.
